Essential oils the new latest thing. If you are a social media or health website user, it would be hard for you to miss them. Are they a craze? A fad? Only for the super healthy? Are they a placebo effect? Read on to learn more.

Would you give me a few minutes of your time to tell you my story?
2016 was a tough year for hubby and I. We lost two very close family members and our dog. I was tired, anxious, overworking, struggling with my gut health and in a lot of pain. Hubby was getting ill with a cold or stomach bug every few months. He wasn’t in the best frame of mind either – can you relate?
Something had to change, but I was unsure what.
During this time, essential oils (EO) seemed to be popping up everywhere! On my Facebook feed, emails and my friends were talking about them too. I had to look into them and find out for myself, are they a fad? So I did a bit of research…


Essential oils are not a new discovery, they have been around for thousands of years. They were first mentioned in Genesis. Plus some of the oldest cultures on earth used essential oils. The Babylonians, Egyptians and Medieval Europeans to name a few. Meaning they have been around for some time!
Essential oils are extracted from all parts of a plant (leaves, roots, flower). They are then distilled to separate the oil from water. You could say essential oils are like the blood of the plant. They are highly concentrated non-water soluble phytochemicals. Luckily for us, this ‘plant blood’ works incredibly well with the human body. This known as aromatherapy.
There are over 100 different types of essential oil, each one coming from a different plant. But, some are more commonly used than others. Lavender, lemon, peppermint and tea tree are probably most widely known and used.
It is important to know, that although essential oils have many health benefits, harm can be caused if not used correctly. They are very concentrated, meaning a little goes a long way, diluting with a carrier oil is best practice.

Benefits & Uses Of Essential Oils

Essential oils provide many health benefits and uses in and around the home. Their benefits come from their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Essential oils support every system in the body. Your skeletal, muscular, circulatory, endocrine, immune and respiratory systems.
Each individual essential oil has its own benefit and use. There are so many to list, that this will be a future blog post to come.

Essential oils can be used as an alternative to toxic cleaning chemicals, beauty cosmetics and personal care products. You can start swapping out every single product in your home to help live a healthier life.
When added to a non toxic carrier oil or substance, like coconut/almond oil, baking soda/arrowroot powder;
Essential oils can be used for:

  • Bug spray
  • Air freshener
  • Washing detergent
  • Dish soap
  • Beauty cosmetics
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash

Do they work?

Yes, most definitely! However, quality is a huge factor. There are some considerations to make before purchase. 
I have used essential oils for quite some time. Occasionally, I would  use Tea Tree oil from the supermarket but wasn’t sure if it actually had much of an effect. I tried using Lavender to help me sleep but hated the smell.
Then I discovered that in the UK/US, there is no rating system for essential oils! The closest the UK/US get is an FDA requirement. That to label a bottle of essential oil as “pure” or “therapeutic grade”, the contents of that bottle must only contain at least 5% essential oil!
Because of this, I had to make sure that I was only using pure essential oil. I didn’t want to use an oil to get away from a chemical, but be using an oil laden with chemicals. That would be counterproductive!


Finding A Company I Trust

It was important to me, to find an essential oil company I trusted. That grows their own plants, owns their own fields, and controls the entire process from Seed to Seal. Meaning, from the farm to the sealed bottle.
Pesticides, pollution, previously farmed land – all can affect the quality of an oil. Because of this, I spent time checking to see which companies were best. I found one that I fell in love with – Young Living.
One of the reasons I went for Young Living is because of their Seed to Seal process. Seed to Seal means that each plant is hand-weeded, no pesticides used, no chemicals, and no weed killers. The plants are harvested at their peak and then put through a vigorous testing process. The essential oils then go from the farm directly to your home.

Do Young Living oils work?

Yes! I can’t imagine my life without essential oils now. They have completely changed my families health – both mentally and physically.
My Husband hasn’t been unwell since he has started using essential oils every day. I cannot remember a time where he had such a long period of being well.
We also diffuse oils to help our emotions, after a stressful day at work. Surprisingly the essential oil aroma calms us down. Therefore everyday we apply essential oils to our skin to support our body’s functioning. We notice the difference if we miss a day without them.

Swap Toxic Products For EO

Did you know, every day we put damaging chemical products on our skin, in our body and breathe them in. The average woman applies over 300 chemicals a day to her body. Through soaps, makeup, shampoo, and hair care products. In fact 80 of these products are applied every day before breakfast!
With this in mind, it is scary to see what is out there.Take a look at the back of the products you buy, you will be shocked! Can you pronounce the words?! If not, use with caution.
What I love about Young Living’s essential oils is that they contain one ingredient. For instance, rosemary, grapefruit, and lemon contain no additives and no chemical rubbish. I now use essential oils in place of the toxic products I used in my home and on my body and feel so much better for it!

Do Your Research

In conclusion make sure you research a brand before you start using their essential oils. Equally important use in a safe manner and enjoy the many health benefits and uses of natures medicine.
Starting to use essential oils is one of the best decisions hubby and I have made.
